Camp grandma

Non stop arts & crafts. Uninterrupted, child focused time. Beach & sand castles. All the ice cream she can eat.

The countdown is on for Camp Grandma!

Next week, my almost 5 year old daughter is heading up to Grandma’s for a week. (For the record, Papa will be there too but the Camp leader is Grandma, Papa is more like the Leader-in-training!)

It will be her first time away from home overnight without us. My parents live 3 hours away and every summer we talk about Lauren having a little trip on her own there, but this is the first year we’ve put the idea into fruition.

She’s excited, Grandma is excited and I think the whole thing is awesome. Grandma has come here to look after the kids when we’ve been away and I know Grandma will take awesome care of her and dote on her a ton. Grandma already has a big list of special activities and a top secret day trip planned to a local amusement park. Plus, Grandma lives at the beach! Good times all round and beautiful memories will be made.

I grew up visiting my Grandma every summer in the same town and my mom spent all her childhood summers under the care of her grandparents in town too. It’s like we’re extending the family tradition.

But, I’m nervous.

I’m nervous for my daughter and that she’ll get homesick. Despite the fact she’ll be in a place she loves and is comfortable in, Lauren is a creature of habit and she’s extremely attached to her Daddy’s bedtime lullabies.

I’m nervous my parents will wear themselves out overdoing it with a non-stop talking, moving, spilling, crafting 5 year old.

Mostly, I’m nervous that I’m not in charge for a week.

I know, I have nothing to worry about but I can’t help it. She’s my first born and it’s her first trip away!

Or maybe I'm just jealous. If someone could just get me a ticket for my own special alone week to Camp Grandma, I’d be a-okay. :)
